Heat pumps are pretty low-maintenance HVAC units compared to many other types of heating and cooling equipment. However, there are a few basic maintenance tasks you can do yourself. This includes keeping snow off your outside unit, clearing away brush and leaves, and regularly changing the filter. For everything else that has to do with your heat pump, you will benefit from the help of a professional HVAC technician.

Annual Maintenance

At a minimum, you should have a professional from our heating tune-up team check out your heat pump once a year. The person performing preventative maintenance should be able to find any potential major problems before they happen. Then, we will give you an estimate of the work that is needed and then get your permission to proceed with any repairs. There are many components that we will check during such a maintenance inspection.

Ducts, Filters, Coil, Outdoor Condenser, and Blower

Ductwork has the potential to leak. In fact, up to 30% of all energy loss in a heat pump system is through leaks in ductwork. The interior evaporator coils can end up with dirt on them, particularly if you haven’t changed the filter regularly. The same is true of the condenser coil in the outdoor unit. One of these coils absorbs heat, and the other will release it. Based on whether your heat pump is in cooling or heating mode, the process changes. There are a couple of ways in which dirt on one or both coils can interfere with heat transfer. We will clean all essential parts and check for air leaks.

Airflow

Your heat pump coils have the potential to freeze if airflow isn’t optimal within your heat pump because the pressure inside the system will drop. Frozen parts are nowhere near as efficient as they should be. Plus, if the ice eventually melts, then you may experience water pooling. Fortunately, many heat pumps use antifreeze to prevent this from happening. Poor airflow can also lead to poor indoor air quality.

Refrigerant Level and Leaks

To run efficiently, your heat pump must have the right amount of refrigerant in its system. Your technician will measure both the refrigerant level and the system’s internal pressure. Anytime the refrigerant level is too low, there may be a leak somewhere. The leak could be so small that it’s impossible to detect without the right kind of equipment. A leak can usually be repaired, and the refrigerant can be recharged.

Your System’s Electronics

Insulation on your system’s wires can fray over time, exposing the metal surfaces of your system to electric current. This can cause short circuits or even fires. Our technician will clean all electrical contacts, tighten connections, and apply a non-conductive coating to any open wires and any adjacent metal surfaces to cut down on the chance of issues.

Lubrication

Your heat pump has many moving mechanical parts, and these parts need lubrication. Your technician will check these parts and add lubricants if needed. This alone can prevent wear and tear on your heat pump.

Reversing Switch

Your heat pump has a switch that trips as the system switches from cooling to heating and back again as necessary. If that switch malfunctions, then your heat pump will stay in one mode. In Browns Summit, NC, where fall temperatures can fluctuate by as much as 30 degrees within a single day, a functioning reversing switch is crucial to keeping your home comfortable.

Thermostat

Your thermostat must be in working condition to be able to control your heat pump. Your technician will check it for both functionality and accuracy. We can recalibrate your thermostat if there are temperature discrepancies. The battery in your thermostat should be changed once per year.
